What's Happening

schmutz07/04/08 Summer is here and the grease is beginning to flow. Chris is doing an amazing job educating area restaurants about our sustainable biodiesel production and the direct benefits our restaurant partners are providing to help fuel a greener Rhode Island. We have 255 restaurant partners and the list continues to grow.

We've had some exciting developments with our waste streams. A company in the Midwest is taking our glycerin byproduct to be used as a lubricant in the production of cement and the goo we refer to around here "schmutz" has found a home at a large scale organic composting facility in South County. An operation where they process a dumpster's load worth of fish and squid parts each day!

Production is rolling right along, just able to keep ahead of collections but we expect that to change soon with the onset of summer. We're averaging about 20,000 gallons a month and hope to bump that up with additional weekend shifts as soon as our collections can support it. We are formulating a plan to increase our production capacity but need to concentrate on getting our feet on the ground first. Stay tuned.

The team at Newport Biodiesel wishes everyone a great summer and remember, eat lots of fried clams!

Who We Are
4mugs_smWe are four local guys trying to make a difference. Newport Biodiesel started with building a pilot project at the Norman Bird Sanctuary (NBS) that demonstrated the ability to produce high quality biodiesel from waste vegetable oil collected from local restaurants. This project provided NBS with biodiesel to heat its buildings and power their farm equipment and it gave us the experience we needed to create a large scale production facility. The benefits of using biodiesel at the NBS are real.

FAQ
What is Biodiesel?
photo2.jpgBiodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines or in oil furnaces with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

Malloy. The focus of our business is the maritime diesel and home heating oil markets. T.H. Malloy is one of the few distributors in Rhode Island with a license to make marine deliveries.
